The sundial is one of the earliest time-keeping devices. Invented by the ancient Egyptians in 1500 BCE it measured time by recording the movements of the shadows cast from the sun. As the shadow moved around the dial, the Egyptians could see that time was passing. Often the dials were divided into 12 equal parts so the day was measured in terms of 12 parts. The Problem With The Sundial The problem with the sundial is that it relied on the sun! So on cloudy days and during the night, it was no good.
