Who Created The Australian Flag?
There were five people who
contributed to the design of our national flag. They all won a design
competition as their entries were almost identical and so they shared
the £200 prize money. The winners were announced and the flag flown
for the first time in 1901.
The five winners were:
- Ivor Evans, a 14 year old schoolboy from Melbourne,
- Leslie Hawkins, a teenager from Sydney,
- Egbert Nuttall, an architect from Melbourne,
- Annie Dorrington, an artist from Perth
- William Stevens, a ship's officer from Auckland, New Zealand.
