Pupa

This stage can vary among different species. Most moth larvae will spin a silken cocoon around it while many butterfly caterpillars find a sheltered spot and deposit the sticky liquid from the spinneret. This liquid then hardens to form a little pad and the exoskeleton starts to split. There is an element of danger about this stage. When the exoskeleton falls off, the pupa places a claw like structure known as the cremaster into the pad. If the cremaster does not grab onto the pad fast enough, the pupa may fall to the ground and die.
