Thorax

The butterfly and moth thorax is made of three segments which each have a set of legs attached. In addition, the second and third segments also have a set of wings each.

Each leg is divided into six segments with a section on the end called tarsi which are used to grip plants and flowers.

Compared to other insects, butterflies have enormous wings which have muscles attached to them. These wings have wing veins which are tubes with thickened walls, providing structure and support for the wings.

A butterfly's wings are covered with tiny, flat scales that overlap. These scales are what give the wings their colour and beautiful patterns. Some scales contain a pigment which provides the colour while other colours are produced by reflected light from the scales surfaces.
