South Sea Islanders

One group of migrants who came to Australia in the mid 1800s were the South Sea Islanders. From 1863 to 1904 about 60,000 South Sea Islanders came to work in Australia. Many worked on sugar cane farms located in Queensland, however some South Sea Islanders contributed to the development of other industries such as: timber, railway, mining and pearling.
