The Sydney Opera House was officially completed in 1973 and is internationally recognised as a symbol of Australia. It is the busiest performing arts centre in the world, attracting the best in world class talent. It is built at Bennelong Point, which was named after the first Aborigine to speak English.
In 1957, a competition was organised to find a suitable architect and specific instructions were given as to what the Opera House design needed to accommodate. Design entrants had complete freedom over their approach and were told that money was no object. A total of 233 different design entries were submitted from all over the world.
Danish architect Jorn Utzon won the competition with his unique design. Construction of the building started in 1959 and was expected to take four years. The building was not completed until 14 years later and only after much controversy.
The Sydney Opera House was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 20 October 1973.
