The Rugby World Cup 2003 

Background

The idea of a Rugby World Cup was initially considered in late 1983, however, the first competition did not occur until 1987. A total of 16 invited countries took part which saw two semi-finals played in Australia, and the final and third/fourth play-off matches played in New Zealand.

This event was broadcast to 17 countries and reached an audience of over 300 million people. Since 4-yearly event's early beginnings, the Rugby World Cup has become the world's third most popular and biggest sports event behind the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup (Soccer).

Rugby World Cup 2003 involves 20 teams with the eight quarter-finalists from 1999 gaining automatic entry. This spectacular sporting event takes place in Australia from 10 October to 22 November 2003 and the following nations will be competing:
