Press Release - The Life Skills Series

A set of four books for primary school aged children.

Perth Wednesday 15, September 2004

This series aims to provide teachers and parents with practical ideas and strategies for developing and enhancing a set of valuable life skills in individual students.

There are numerous resources and articles about teaching values, dealing with grief and loss, addressing bullying and the like, however, most of these articles and programs outline strategies for dealing with the problem at the whole-school level. While this is indeed a very appropriate way to deal with such matters, it has become obvious that there is a lack of ready-to-use materials for the actual classroom teacher or parent who feels that their child needs extra attention in a particular area, depending on what is going on in their life at the moment. The Life Skills Series aims to fill the gap between the frameworks set out by national bodies and the delivery of practical and meaningful learning opportunities and coping strategies either in the classroom or at home.

The books address everyday issues such as coping with the death or serious illness of a classmate, sibling or parent; divorce and separation; bullying and conflict at school and at home; family violence; coping with a disability; raising self-esteem and instilling values; and creating better relationships with family and friends.

The Life Skills Series comprises four books:

Self Esteem and Values

Grief, Illness and Other Issues

Bullying and Conflict

Family Relationships

Developing an awareness of feelings

Goal-setting

Enriching values in the classroom

·           Coping with disability, serious illness, grief and loss of classmates, family members and friends

Coping with bullying at school

Addressing difficult situations using a problem solving approach

Discussing family roles and relationships

Dealing with feelings and emotions in a range of contexts

Exploring strategies for coping with difficult issues such as separation, divorce and family conflicts.

This series came about as a result of the author’s teaching colleagues identifying a lack of information and practical resources for dealing with particular events and situations that can arise in classrooms from time to time.

As well as student worksheets, all books contain extensive background notes for teachers, parents and students. Several sections contain annotated guides to relevant websites and literature resources available both online and in hard copy.

Ready-Ed Publications, a Western Australian based company, has built a reputation as publishers of Australian made, high quality, innovative, timesaving materials for teachers of students aged 5-15 years. In recent years, they have moved their focus away from blackline masters and onto text and reference materials for classrooms and libraries as a stepping stone towards the commercial booksellers and parent/teenager market. While this market is essentially a new avenue for Ready-Ed Publications, they hope to bring their knowledge and expertise in publishing student and teacher resources to a new market.
